The co-drivers view: Deventer

Driving around a typical Dutch town with a population of about 100.000 people.

We start on a dike just outside the city in front of the river IJssel, the Wilhelminabridge to left is the entrance to the city. In 1977 the movie "a bridge too far" was filmed here because the bridge was exactly the same as in Arnhem, but in Arnhem there where to many modern buildings surrounding the bridge so they switched to the Wilhelminabrug in Deventer.

After continuing on the dike we turn onto the bridge and into the city. Left from the first roundabout is the city center, but this is closed for motorists. Head on is the "Boreelkazerne", and old military complex that has been turned into a shopping mall, including a cinema and small houses.
Much of the old buildings in this area, mostly industrial estates and small workers houses have been torn down and replaced by modern buildings with various purposes (schools, college, government agencies etc.). Antoher point of interest is the incorporation of a lot of "green" into the city area, a concept that is used in most Dutch cities.

In the second part of the movie we drive into a small town of "Schalkhaar", that over the years has been connected to the city of Deventer. At last we exit the suburban area and enter a more rural part that is common for this region in Holland.
