Walkaround of the Audi A6 3.0 TDI Avant with S-line package:
In the rivalry between the Mercedes Benz E-class, BMW 5-series the Audi A6, the latter one is the oldest on the market, having been introduced in 2004. But how well does it fare against the newer competition?
1. Exterior
Audi's design is tailored around simplicity, no progressive and controversial lines, but smooth and simple yet elegant. By trying to keep the design simple, Audi is trying to be everybody's friend, and to appeal to as many different tastes possible.
But still Audi wants to convey a modern image, and the 2008 facelift has brought this in the form of LED-lights in the headlamp units. Some other minor changes in the design of the tail and fog lights have been made, but they are only noticeable to the trained eye.
This Ibis White Audi A6 has been fitted with the optional S-line package, both for the exterior and interior. It comes with 18-inch alloys (not fitted on the pictures, those are 17-inch winter tires), S-line badging left and right, a lowered suspension and altered front- and rear bumpers.
2. Engine, Transmission & handling
Several engines are available on the Audi A6, in this review the 2.7 TDI and 3.0 TDI. The main difference of both engines is the displacement, the driving characteristics feel the same although the 2.7 TDI is slower at high speeds. But from the point of engines noise and general feeling, they are similar.
Turning to the 3.0 TDI with the Quattro all-wheel drive system. Engine noise seems to be somewhat higher then in the BMW 5-series E60, while the engine sound itself also is more crude, getting annoying when accelerating. However, the 240hp is excellent, there is always enough power available to master any situation, at both high and low speeds.
But only power is not enough, the car should also be able to put it on the road. The Quattro-system ensures that enough power is transferred into acceleration, while "normal" FWD or RWD cars will have its power cut by the electronic aids. However, the Quattro-system does increase fuel consumption and reduce slightly performance.
All the Audi A6 that are equipped with the Quattro-system have a "Tiptronic" automatic transmission (6-speed), while the front-wheel-drive A6 are fitted with a "Multitronic" automatic transmission (6-speed). Multitronic is a "shiftable" CVT with preprogramed ratios to immulate a regular transmission with gears, while the Tiptronic is just a standard automatic transmission. Gearshifts of the automatic transmission are almost not noticeable, only the change in revs of the engines lets the driver know that gears are being changed. Compared to BMW or MB, the Tiptronic transmission is a bit slower to respond to the drivers input.
Handling of the Audi A6 is said to be in between the comfort of Mercedes Benz, and the sportiness of BMW. A compromise is a trade-off in which neither side is perfect, and in this case the A6 lacks comfort yet has not the same driving pleasure as the BMW. It is somewhat heavy and detached from the road, resulting in a more passive driving experience. However, even the sports suspension of the S-line package never is too uncomfortable, so the car is suited for long-distance traveling.
But the handling is not only influenced by the suspension, Audi offers both the Quattro-system and a front-wheel-drive version of the A6. As the car already puts a strain on the front axle, the FWD-versions are not able to cope with the amount of power in excess of 170hp. When driving fast corners or accelerating quickly, a heavy strain is put on the front axle. This results in a nervous handling, which can be felt in the steering wheel, while also creating a tendency to understeer.
3. Interior & Technical Features
The build quality in the interior of the Audi A6 is one of the best of its class, it looks very solid, and feels very high-grade. Although the interior is modern and sophisticated, the amount of different colors (red, white and blue) and the buttons don't quite give it the tidy appearance of the BMW.
Sport seats are included in the S-line package, and this A6 had also the optional black Milano leather. Seating position is excellent, and even after longer journeys the driver still has no problems whatsoever.
In the A6, Audi offers HDD Navigation with MMI. Even a layman has no problems to enter a route by using the MMI system, or using the voice control instead. When computing the route to the destination, the driver is offered three different possible routes to choose from. TMC also updated the driver on any issues that might arise on this route, ranging from traffic jams to speeding traps, and offering other possibilities to circumvent the problem.
Although Audi offers SD-card slots for playing music. As SD-cards an unusual medium to store music on, the Audi Music Interface does offer the possibility to connect a USB-stick or iPod. Audi's that do not have the Audi Music Interface can be retrofitted with the system, please contact your local dealer for more information and the price tag.
Inextricably linked to a music interface is the stereo system, this Audi A6 being equipped with the optional Audi Sound System. For the more demanding listener this system is sufficient, it has enough performance to play more demanding music at higher volumes. But the expert listener might want to opt for a more sophisticated system.
One of its largest in its class, the boot space in the A6 is more then enough, though the seats cannot fold flat. The load-area fixing kit is the perfect tool to secure any luggage against swerving around the boot. As cars are usually not the cleanest objects, the automatic boot lid is a useful and relatively cheap option to open and close the trunk without getting your hands dirty, therefore deserving some consideration when ordering.
4.Optional Equipment
This section discusses (part of) the optional equipment available on the W212. Ranking from 1 (definitely a yes), 2 (nice to have, but not a minimum requirement) to 3 (not worth the money).
Privacy glass, mostly for the looks, only limited practical use. (ranking: 2)
Xenon plus, improves the appearance and includes LED's. (ranking: 1)
Electric tilt-and-slide glass sunroof, allows extra light into the car, and in good weather enables the driver to enjoy the wind / sun a bit more. However, at speeds above 100km/h (60mp/h) it makes too much noise. (ranking: 2)
Black styling pack, mainly for the looks, no practical use. (ranking: 2)
S-line package, includes alloys, sports seats and several other options that improve the driving experience. (ranking: 1)
Automatically actuated boot lid, a nice feature to keep your hands clean when opening or closing the trunk of a dirty car. (ranking: 2)
Load-area fixing kit, helps the luggage to stay in place while driving, otherwise the items would be flying through the boot. (ranking: 1)
Electric front seats, makes it easier to adjust the seating position, but is not an absolute necessity. (ranking: 2)
Heated front seats, when the car is cold the leather also feels very unpleasantly cold, the seat heating heats up in no time. The heating is also very enjoyable on long cruises, the relax ones muscles. (ranking: 1)
Audi acoustic parking system plus, helps the driver to judge the distance when parking near objects. The normal system is rear only, without the optical view in the navigation screen. (ranking: 1)
HDD Navigation with CD changer, a very good asset for navigating, the color screen improves the experience significantly. (ranking: 1)
Auto-dimming rear view mirror, during night-time driving the auto-dimming mirror reduces the need to switch the mirror manually from being blinded by other traffic. (ranking: 1)
Quattro all-wheel-drive, improves the handling significantly and enables more power to be transferred to the road. (ranking: 1)
Final thoughts:
A compromise does define the Audi A6, in the respective fields the BMW 5-series is sportier while the Mercedes Benz E-class is more comfortable. But does this mean that the Audi A6 will lose out these competitors? I do not think so, many people are probably looking for just such a compromise. Having a modern yet reserved styling, there will be no offensive taken from the design, the car stays in the background and will not raise too much (unwelcome) attention.
However, the build quality of the car is not a compromise, it is a very high quality car that is on the same level as its competition, if not one of the best. The interior is of the same high quality while it is laid out very logically.
When it comes to the transmission and engine, the car is almost on the same level as the competition, the main drawback being the FWD that is not able to turn the performance onto the road. The Quattro 4-wheel-drive does solve this, but that comes with an increase in weight and fuel consumption.
In short, the Audi A6 is a very good car that does justice to the demands places in a premium brand car. However, as a compromise it does have its small penalties when it comes to the drivetrain. But if these outweigh the positive benefits one derives from this car, it certainly is a good buy.

Car review: Mercedes Benz E220 CDI W212 Avantgarde

Mercedes Benz is actively trying to convey a more modern and stylish look, competing with Audi and BMW, as Mercedes Benz' traditional target group is growing older and slowly getting extinct. Contrary to the its predecessor (W211), the change of design is resembled by the ninth generation E-class (internally known as the W212 for the sedan, and S212 for the estate), that has more straight and angular lines. Highlighting this change towards modernism is the Avantgarde package, that includes LED daytime running lights among other features. LED-technology is not only limited to the front of the car, it is also utilized at the rear of the car.
For the paintwork a range of colors is available, ranging from several shades of black, grey, blue to silver and white. At the end of this review you will find a series of pictures with the E200 CGI in Obsidian black metallic, the E220 CDI in Iridium silver metallic and the E350 CDI Kombi in Calcite white. Standing out from the normal range of colors is Cuprite brown metallic, which is a dark reddish / brown tone. It seems that brown is succeeding white as a fashionable color, as Audi and BMW also introduced their own brownish colors.
2.Engine, Transmission & handling
Not all the W212 have the same transmission, the 4-cylinder (E200, E220 and E250) have the 5-speed automatic gearbox, while the 6- and 8-cylinder (E300, E350 and E500) are equipped with the 7G-tronic. This has a negative impact on both the performance and driving experience of the 4-cylinder W212s.
Engine and transmission
Mercedes Benz E200 CGI and E220 CDI (4-cylinder, 5-speed automatic gearbox)
In the E200 CGI, a 4-cylinder petrol engine with a turbo delivers an output of 184hp and 230km/h topspeed. When driving, the car always has sufficient power and never feels slowish, while the engine sounds refined and never becomes too audible. However, the main drawback is the 5-speed gearbox. It is slow to respond to the drivers input, and the lack of gears means that it has to rev higher at a certain speed. This results in part of the power of the engine being “sunk” into the gearbox, while the higher revs result in higher noise levels and an increased fuel consumption.
A direct (diesel) counterpart to the E200 CGI is the E220 CDI, roughly delivering the same output (170hp and 227km/h topspeed), but utilizing two turbo's instead of just one. A small turbo is used in the lower part of the revs, and when the revs build, a big turbo kicks in. This results in a reduced turbo lag, and the maximum output of the engine is reached faster. Unfortunately, it is not all gold that glitters. Mated to the same 5-speed automatic gearbox, it means that the E220 CDI suffers the same drawbacks as the E200 CGI. Although feeling a bit more powerful due to the two turbo's, the fuel consumption is around 1 to 1.5 liters higher compared to the BMW 520d E60. When driving, the gearbox is very unruly while shifting up and down trying to find the right gear. By nature, a diesel engine conveys a higher level of noise, but in the E220 CDI it is downright obnoxious. These problems could be overcome if Mercedes Benz would fit its 7G-tronic into the E220 CDI, vastly improving the driving experience due to lower revs, faster gear shifts and a lower fuel consumption. According to unconfirmed sources, Mercedes Benz will introduce the 7G-tronic into the 4-cylinder models somewhere in 2011.

Mercedes Benz E350 CGI and E350 CDI (6-cylinder, 7G-tronic)
Turning to the 6-cylinder engines, a completely different driving experience is felt. Part of this is due to the nature of a 6-cylinder engine, that is smoother and more powerful, but also due to the 7G-tronic that is more responsive.
Performance of the E350 CGI is rated at 292hp with a topspeed of 250km/h, produced by a V6 engine a 3.5 liter displacement. It is an extremely smooth, yet powerful engine. To develop the full potential, the car has to build up revs, which the 7G-tronic does very precise and fast. The car pulls right up to 250km/h without problems, always having enough power in reserve. Only the fuel consumption is, when driving at higher speeds, quite high. For a coupe or convertible that is not such a problem, but with a sedan or estate the range is more important.
The E350 CDI engine is a 6-cylinder diesel engine with 231hp (now, 265hp) and a topspeed of 240km/h for the “Kombi”, as the estate is called in Germany. Compared to the E350 CGI, the diesel engine does substantially resemble the experience. Most noticeable is that the engine is almost as quit as its petrol counterpart, at low revs it is almost not audible at all. Performance is always readily available, although at higher speeds (above 180km/h) it seems to get more sluggish.
The 7G-tronic does its job very good, but the main advantage of the diesel is its better fuel consumption. Although it is better then the petrol engine, it still is not as good compared to Audi's 3.0 TDI oder BMW 530d, the average fuel consumption is around one liter higher, something all the W212's seem to suffer from, regardless the engine. Probably the slightly more unfavorable drag coefficient is the cause of this, as the weight of the car is comparable to the competition.
But in all, the E350 CDI probably is the best engine for the W212, combining fuel economy with performance and lots of comfort in terms of engine noise and gearbox changes.

E350 CDI: 10,6l / 100km (22,19mpg / US)
Handling:
An altered Direct Control suspension (stiffer and 15mm lower) is included in the Avantgarde package, resulting in a different handling compared to the standard suspension. In the Avantgarde trim, the cars response is direct and the driver is better connected to the road, reducing the spongy response that Mercedes Benz normally has. Audis and BMWs in this class tend to be more nervous as high speeds, requiring the driver to put effort into the driving. The Avantgarde suspension does an excellent job here, it is not as nervous as the Audi and BMW, while also not as spongy as the standard MBs are, dampening the extreme forces on the car, resulting in a smooth and calm handling, while still providing enough information to the driver to give him the feeling that he is in control. In short, the handling of the W212 Avantgarde is very impressive, especially as it combines “sport” and “comfort” in such a refined way, whereas Audi and BMW are focused more towards “sport”.
3. Interior & Technical Features
With the new design of the W212, Mercedes Benz also has continued its concept of a central controller that steers several functions of the car, but contrary to BMW's iDrive there still remain a substantial amount of buttons in the center console, somewhat distracting the drivers attention from the road. But a large improvement is that the entertainment screen now moved upwards, and the drivers attention is not directed more downwards as in the W211. A difference between the 4- and 6-cylinders is that the first one still have an old-fashioned gear selector in the middle, while the latter ones have a gear selector attached to the steering wheel. Generally, most of the interior looks premium, from switches to the steering wheel, it feels pleasant and solid.
Contrary to this positive perception, some details are very disappointing as they are not in line with the otherwise premium impression the W212 makes. In the center console, the buttons for the seat heating, and the combi instrument for the windscreen wipers and indicators give a flimsy and cheap impression. Also the LED-displays for the Parktronic are not of the premium level that can be expected from a car in this class.
In the E220 CDI, the APS50 navigation system has been built in. It does a good job showing directions, but the additional functions are very limited. Other satnav systems display the traffic messages (TMC) directly into the main screen to draw the drivers attention, but the APS50 requires a manual check of the submenu. Another disadvantage is that near junctions, the satnav does not show a splitscreen with the map and the arrow next to it, but only shows the arrow instead. Apart from that, the central controller and the software itself (for operating the cars entertainment system) is easy to understand and operate.
When driving different brands of cars, one very easily is getting used to the prominent system. The Parktronic of Mercedes Benz is an example of a system that works differently. Normally the intensity of the sound increases while in the center display the distance to an object is shown. The Parktronic system however only shows colors in the LED-display at the front or the back, showing LED-lights when closing in on an object only to start making sounds when the object is in the direct vicinity of the car. When relying on solely the sound as most systems are configured, it takes time to get used to Mercedes Benz' Parktronic.
4.Optional Equipment

- Avantgarde package, includes Bi-xenon headlamps, nice alloy wheels and LED-lighting. Compared to the Elegance- or Standard-package, the Avantgarde Package gives the car a more modern and up-to-date appearance. (ranking: 1)
- Remote boot closing is a nice feature to keep your hands clean when opening or closing the trunk of a dirty car. (ranking: 2)
- Multi-contour front seats - driver and passenger, if the standard seats do not match the drivers preference, the multi-contour seats offer a comfort premium (ranking: 2)
- Electric glass sunroof, allows extra light into the car, and in good weather enables the driver to enjoy the wind / sun a bit more. However, at speeds above 100km/h (60mp/h) it makes too much noise. (ranking: 2)
- Ashtray & cigarette lighter, allows the connection of the adapter for charging a mobile phone. (ranking: 1)
- Night view assist plus, the display in the center console is distracting too much from the road, so the system only has limited use, especially for the amount of money charged for it.. (ranking: 3)
- Reversing camera is useful to see objects behind the car, but the Parktronic will also pick this up. (ranking: 2)
- TV tuner allows to watch TV in the car, but only at slow speeds. (ranking: 2)
- Harman Kardon® Logic 7® Surround-sound system is a big upgrade compared to the standard system, but only required is the standard system is not sufficient for the owner. (ranking: 2)
- Audio 50 APS with DVD navigation system is sufficient for giving directions, but its options are limited. Also it does not have a splitscreen and is not always showing the accurate TMC traffic information. The COMAND system might be a bit more expensive, but also has a larger range of options available. (ranking: 3)
- COMAND Navigation (integrated 6 disc CD/DVD changer, HDD map navigation, 6GB music register, PCMCIA slot and Linguatronic) is an integrated multimedia system, not only the satellite navigation, but also the telephone and entertainment options are integrated into this system and operated from one central unit. (ranking: 1)
- 80 litre fuel tank is more convenient as it gives the car a larger range. (ranking: 1)
- Active Blind Spot Assist (ranking: 1)
- DISTRONIC PLUS incl. PRE-SAFE®-Brake (ranking: 2)
- Active Lane Keeping Assist. (ranking: 2)
- Parktronic helps the driver to judge the distance when parking near objects. (ranking: 1)
Final thoughts:
After a total of 9.000 kilometers (5625 miles) in several W212s, it has proven to be a good car but unfortunately it also suffers from several flaws. The first, and most important one, is that the 5-speed automatic transmission is outdated, resulting in a decreased driving experience and increased fuel consumption. The 7G-tronic should solve these issues, and it is expected that it will be introduced in 2011 (in the 4-cylinder models).
Another point of critique is the quality of the interior, in which details are not up to the premium standard. Mercedes Benz could have used better materials here, and dropped the ball by using sub-standard materials.
Apart from these points, the new E-class still remains a good car. In terms of comfort it is the best car in its class, with an excellent handling, very quit E350 CDI diesel engine and a good standard seat. The E-class is also one of the biggest cars in its class, having more then sufficient space in the front and back, while the trunk holds a large volume of cargo.
Only one serious issue is known at the moment, during 2009 and early 2010 the W212 suffered of injector problems. This problem was limited to the E220 and E250 CDI, but seems to be resolved in early 2010. When buying a second hand W212, it is recommended to check if these problems have already been resolved. Apart from that the W212 is a good buy as a second hand car, the engine and transmission are reliable, and time has to show if the biturbo concept on the E220 and E250 also is durable.

1. Exterior
Normally when a new car makes its way to the dealership, it makes a predecessor that looked just fine the other day, into an outdated and old fashioned car. However, the design of the previous 5-series (E60) was so progressive, that even with the new 5-series (F10) on the market, it still looks like a modern up-do-date business sedan. A design that has been developed by the controversial Mr. Bangle, it was opposed the 7-series (E65), quite well received and outselling its predecessors. In contrast to the bulgy and fat 7-series, the 5-series design was sleek, modern but yet prominently tailored towards the business segment.
Another part of the modern appearance can be attributed to facelift in 2007, or Life Cycle Improvement (LCI) in the BMW nomenclature, which featured new bumpers, LED-light design, as well as several small interior updates (see the “Interior & Technical Features section for the 2009 sat-nav update).
The 5-series could be ordered with the M-Sport package, significantly altering the appearance of the car. Enlarged bumpers and sideskirts, combined with 18- (styling 135M) or 19-inch (styling 172M) alloys gave it a more aggressive and muscular look.
This review focuses on a 2009 BMW 520d LCI with the alpine white, non metallic, color. White has become a very fashionable color on cars, although it suffers the same drawback as black, requiring regular cleaning as dirt and other filth is easily spotted. Silver and grey are colors that are easier to maintain, making dirt and filth is less noticeable. White also tends to absorb the sleek lines of the E60, losing some of the business style appearance.
When opting for a white car, the BMW M-package might be a good consideration, as the enlarged bumpers and sideskirts tend to cancel out this effect.
Proportions can make or break any car design, and choosing the right alloy wheels plays an important role. Alloys should not be to small for the wheel arches, while they certainly should not be too big. As can be seen on the pictures, the car is fitted with a 17-inch wheel (styling 243) that fit the wheel arches perfectly. Several 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels are optional for the E60, while the 520d came standard with a 16-inch wheel.
2. Engine & handling
Over the past few years, alternative sources of propulsion for cars have been proposed, developed and build. The Toyota Prius, the BMW Hybrid7 or the Electric Mini Cooper are just a few examples of the new era of technology. As with every new technology, it still has its drawbacks. High cost, limited practicability (range) and durability are obstacles that will refrain consumers from buying these kind of cars, and therefore most of the cars sold are still powered by traditional petrol- and diesel engines.
But can a traditional diesel engine not only be efficient, but also deliver enough performance to for a luxury premium sedan?
Yes it can!
Under the bonnet are 177 horses that are more than sufficient to get the car going, in normal traffic conditions the driver has enough power in reserve to master every situation. When accelerating, the amount of torque plays is an important factor, and the 520d possesses a satisfactory 350nm. The 520dA is mated with a perfectly working 6-speed automatic gearbox, that keeps the amount of revs low, while shifting gears is only noticeable by the change in engine noise and revs.
Only when hitting speeds in excess of 160km/h (100mp/h), it because noticeable that the 520d is “merely” a 2.0 liter engine lacking the acceleration that is offered by 6-cylinders. Another negative aspect is that when the engine is revved above 2500rpm, the engine noise becomes too noticeable. However, both critiques will rarely apply for most drivers.
The most remarkable aspect is the fuel economy, or moreover the fuel efficiency. Driving in Germany above 200km/h (125mp/h) has resulted in a fuel consumption of around 9 liters, while slower driving amounts to a range as low as 6 liters per 100km (39,2 mpg / US). This is where its strength comes into play, as the trip computer will show a maximum range exceeding 1100km (730 miles), saving the owner of a 520d money and time, as the need for refueling on a regular basis decreases. In Europe it is rarely called that way, but in the United States this extra range would receive the predicate “convenience”.
Although the 525d only has 20hp (197hp) more compared to the 520d, the 3.0 liter R6-cylinder engine that is mounted does provide a smoother and less noisier drive. The increase in performance is limited, but requires about 1liter/100km extra in fuel consumption. Fixed costs are roughly the same as for the 530d, but this engine does have noticeable extra power, therefore being a better choice when opting for a 6-cylinder engine.
If Dom Pérignon is the champagne for the connoisseur, BMWs 6-cylinder in-line petrol engine is the engine for the connoisseur. BMW has always been famous for producing one of the best, if not the best engine in this segment. Equipped with 218hp, it has more hp and a higher top speed then the 525d while the amount of torques (270nm vs. 400nm) is significantly lower.
Compared to the diesel engine (525d), the 525i lacks a turbo, resulting in the maximum performance being achieved only above 4000 revs. However, the engine is very quiet, and delivers its power in a smooth and linear way, resulting in a more comfortable drive.
The main drawback of a petrol engine is the fuel consumption, the 525i ranges between 8 and 12 liter / 100km (29,4 to 19,6mpg / US), curtailing the range compared to the diesel engines.
After the introduction of the facelift in 2007, BMW did have minor problems with the injectors (in the 523i, 525i and 530i). In the 3rd quarter of 2008 these problems were resolved, therefore if buying a car from that period, one might want to pay extra attention to see if the injectors were successfully replaced.
3. Interior & Technical Features
Although there usually is only one facelift during the lifecycle of a car, each car manufacturer makes small changes each year. Usually the consumer does not even notice these changes, but sometimes they are somewhat larger. In 2007, the facelift introduced minor changes to the interior design. It still looks very clean and modern, yet it might be perceived as cold. The design of the door and the position of the buttons for the windows has changed, and new materials / colors have also found its way into the E60. Unfortunately the window buttons are positioned a bit awkward, mistakenly opening the rear windows while aiming for the front windows. Another spot of bother is the automatic air conditioning, the system looks somewhat outdated when compared to that of the other BMW ranges which are easier to operate, partially due to the LED-screens displaying the temperature for both sides independently. Apart from that, the interior gives a solid and premium impression, while the rest of the buttons and the iDrive system can be reached intuitively.
After the E60 was facelifted in 2007, BMW did introduce a new satellite navigation + harddisk storage space in 2009, which effectively brought this equipment onto the same same level introduced with new 7-series (F01) and the new 5-series (F10). Better graphics, more information and improved connectivity with online services provide the driver not only with a simple navigation, but with a wide array of information. With the touch of a button, the car (that has a separate SIM-card installed) connects the driver with a call-center operator that is able to answer any question posed to him. The car sends through the sat-nav system the exact location to the operator, that in turn can send the driver the required address directly onto the satnav (just hit confirm, and the route is calculated).
Shortly before the new sat nav system was introduced, BMW also added a new iDrive controller to the E60, including extra buttons for faster operation of the systems.
4.Optional Equipment
This section discusses (part of) the optional equipment available on the E60. Ranking from 1 (definitely a yes), 2 (nice to have, but not a minimum requirement) to 3 (not worth the money).
- The quality of the Dakota leather is satisfactory, only after time it tends so start signs of wear. However, leather is easier to clean then cloth, and if it is properly maintained (BMW leather polish) its good condition will be sustained for a couple of years. Leather gives a car a more premium atmosphere, and would definitely be an option worth considering. (ranking: 1)
- Xenon headlights, give the car a business look and more “overtaking prestige” in the left lane. Certainly worth the money. (ranking: 1)
- 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels are giving the car the right proportions, also a good option to spend your money on. (ranking: 1)
- The standard steering wheel is sufficient, so the sport steering wheel would only be nice to have (ranking: 2)
- Lane-departure warning, if not paying attention, it is a good feature to help refocus on driving. However, in some situations it might annoy the driver when passing the lines on the road. (ranking: 2)
- Head-up-display, should help the driver keep focused on the road, but without it the navigation screen and speedometer do the job just as fine. (ranking: 3)
- Active cruise control, very nice system to have, but it only can be used in a limited amount of situations. When it is too busy, it leaves too much space, so that other cars drive into the safety distance. (ranking: 3)
- HiFi system & HiFi system professional Logic7, the standard system can only be used moderately, a larger HiFi system is advisable. Depending on personal preference, either the Hifi or the Logic7. (Hifi ranking: 1; Logic7 ranking: 2)
- USB-adapter, allows for extra flexibility plus a wider selection of music, connecting a USB-stick or iPod, no more hassle with changing CDs. (ranking: 1)
- Bluetooth, perfect for connecting every type of telephone, controlling the phone through the buttons on the steering wheel. (ranking: 1)
- Sports- or comfort seats, if the standard seats are not sufficient, then opt for these seats, otherwise the standard seats in combination with lumbar support are also perfectly suited. (ranking: 2)
- Automatic air conditioning, allows for a dual-zone setup + easier operation of the climate settings. (ranking: 1)
- Electric sunroof, allows extra light into the car, and in good weather enables the driver to enjoy the wind / sun a bit more. However, at speeds above 100km/h (60mp/h) it makes too much noise. (ranking: 2)
Final thoughts:
After driving a total of 14.000 kilometers (8750 miles) in several versions of the E60, this car can be recommended as a good choice for second hand business sedan, that still has enough potential to keep up with today's new models.
The best value for money is provided by the 520d, the performance it has is sufficient, but the 4-cylinder engine keeps the costs in terms of fuel economy, taxes, and insurance relatively low. It is a very reliable car that, the engine and transmission have no specific problems, and if being properly driven the turbo can also stay with one for a significant amount of kilometers.
When buying a MY2009 model, it has already encountered steep depreciation after the first year, and also as a result of the introduction of the new 5-series (F10). In Germany prices for a used MY2009 520d E60 (option levels comparable to 4. Optional Equipment) range from €32.000 to €36.000, a percentage wise depreciation between 35% and 41%.

Tales of the Autobahn: Part 1
Tales of the Autobahn: Accident on Autobahn A3
In "tales of the Autobahn" everyday stories of what happens on the Autobahn will be published. If driving on the Autobahn, one will encounter accidents, road works, traffic jams or just beautiful scenery's.
This episode, Guitigefilmpjes is cruising down the Autobahn A3 between Frankfurt am Main and Cologne (Köln) in Germany. As the end of the holidays are rapidly approaching, there is a lot of traffic coming from the south, transiting through Germany, towards the Netherlands. Combined with the rainy weather, aquaplaning is a dangerous situation waiting to happen.
While driving the satnav displayed a TMC-warning, informing about an accident that had happened on my route. Of the 3 lanes, 2 lanes were blocked and a traffic jam was growing rapidly. Several kilometers from the accident site the end of the traffic jam was being secured by a police vehicle, trying to prevent more accidents at the end of the traffic jam from happening. And although medical assistance rushed to the scene, by the time we passed it the cars had already moved to the hard shoulder. Cause of the accident was a too high speed in rainy condition, resulting in aquaplaning and several cars bumping into each other.

The co-drivers view: Berlin
In "the co-drivers view", you have the opportunity to travel with Guitigefilmpjes together along interesting routes, cities, or just in ordinary everyday traffic. Not only limited to one country, Guitigefilmpjes is hitting the streets in several European countries, enabling you to see what the traffic / streets / cities in other countries look like from the co-drivers perspective.
The first episode is made in the city of Berlin, the capital of the federal republic of Germany. In Berlin, there is an extended infrastructure that supports the mobility requirements of the 5.000.000 that live in the metropolitan area (3.400.000 in the city itself). Main streets consist of several lanes, while outside of the city the "Berliner Ring" is connecting all the trunk routes to each other.
First some famous landmarks can be seen, followed by a drive to the outskirts of the city in which you can view the "normal" Berlin while heading north, for the Autobahn A24 to the city of Hamburg.
You can find a map of the route unterneath each video, accompanied by a short discription of what you see.
Starting of in the centre of the city, first the Brandenburg Gate and the Pariser Platz can be seen. Just behind the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall once used to divide the city (the camera is in the east, looking to the west). After turning on the Pariser Platz, we drive onto "Unter den Linden" and then turn left (north) towards the new central station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof). Ending the video next to the other side of the central station on the Invalidenstraße heading for Berlin Moabit.
Starting on the same point on the Invalidenstraße where we left in the first part, the direction towards the west is maintained, turning into the residential area of Berlin Moabit. Then we take a left turn back towards Tiergarten (next to the S-Bahn station), onto the "Straße des 17. Juni" which commemorates the rise of the East-German population against the communist government in 1953. This street continues onto a big roundabout which has the "Berliner Siegessäule" in the middle. To the left and the right a big public park can be seen, that is known as "Tiergarten".
In the final part, the video again starts where the second part has ended. Driving onto the Budapester Straße and along the trainstation "Zoologischer Garten", we cut through the old city center of West-Berlin. Continuing north towards the Autobahn, we pass the residential area in the west before leaving the city near the airport "Tegel".
